As February 2025 marks the beginning of significant fasting periods for both Orthodox Christians and Muslims, it is an opportunity for organizations to foster an inclusive and supportive work environment.
Understanding Religious Fasting in February 2025
Religious fasting is an important spiritual practice observed by many faith communities around the world. This month, two major fasting periods begin:
Great Lent for Orthodox Christians – Ethiopian, Eritrean, and other Orthodox Christians commence their fasting period on February 24, 2025. This includes dietary restrictions, with many avoiding meat, dairy, and animal products for 55 days leading up to Easter.
Ramadan for Muslims – The holy month of Ramadan starts on the evening of February 28, 2025. During this period, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other activities during daylight hours.
As businesses in the Netherlands continue to embrace multicultural workplaces, recognizing and respecting these practices can strengthen workplace relationships and improve employee well-being.
How Employers Can Support Fasting Employees
Creating an inclusive work culture means making small but meaningful adjustments to accommodate the needs of employees observing religious fasting. Here are some best practices:
1. Foster Awareness and Understanding
Encourage open discussions about religious fasting to increase awareness among colleagues.
Offer internal communications or training to help employees understand different cultural and religious practices.
2. Be Mindful of Energy Levels
Employees who are fasting may experience lower energy levels in the afternoons.
Consider adjusting work schedules, offering flexible break times, or allowing lighter tasks later in the day.
3. Respect Food and Drink Restrictions
Avoid scheduling mandatory lunch meetings or eating in front of fasting colleagues during meal breaks.
Provide designated quiet areas where fasting employees can rest or pray if needed.
4. Offer Workplace Flexibility
Where possible, allow remote work or flexible working hours for employees observing fasting.
Adjust shift schedules to accommodate those who may prefer working earlier in the day when energy levels are higher.
5. Encourage an Inclusive and Supportive Environment
Create a culture where employees feel comfortable sharing their religious observances.
Organize inclusive workplace events, such as Iftar (breaking of the fast) gatherings, to celebrate diversity.
Why Inclusion Matters
An inclusive workplace is not only beneficial for employees but also for businesses. Companies that actively support diversity and inclusion see increased employee engagement, higher retention rates, and a stronger sense of belonging among their workforce. Recognizing and respecting religious observances fosters a positive and collaborative work environment, ultimately enhancing productivity and innovation.
At Inclusive Workforce Solutions (IWS), we believe that embracing diversity leads to stronger, more connected teams. By making small accommodations and fostering cultural awareness, businesses can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable workforce.
